Our Story

History Salonika Imports is an importer, wholesaler and distributor of fine Mediterranean culinary products.  Founded in 1977 by Takis Kontoulis, Salonika is named after the city of Thessaloniki – the second largest city in Greece. Located in Pittsburgh's historic Strip District, Salonika is owned and operated by Chris T. Balouris.  Chris, a Carnegie Mellon graduate, born and raised in Pittsburgh, took over the business in 2006.  Chris and his family look forward to continuing Salonika's tradition of extraordinary quality products and fine service. Products Salonika imports high quality Mediterranean products, with a focus on culinary goods from Greece, Bulgaria, Spain and Turkey. Key products include: Roasted red peppers Pepperoncini Sun-dried tomatoes Olives (our wide selection includes: Kalamata, pitted, green, green stuffed w/garlic, black Greek, Chios and black oil cured) Olive oil: Extra Virgin, Pure & Pomace Stuffed grape leaves Crushed eggplant Oregano Gardeniera (vegetable mix) Capers Capotes   Salonika also distributes the following products: Gyro Products (including meat, pitas and cucumber sauce) Imported Feta Cheese (sheep's milk) Spinach Pies Cheese Pies Fillo Dough Pita Chips Specialty Flatbreads Greek Pastries – Baklava, Kataifi, Kourambeithes Bulgarian Spreads (including red pepper, zucchini and eggplant) Tahini Figs Dates   Services Salonika Imports is available to provide products for both retailers and consumers. Product delivery is available to retailers and via our website.  Our retail store is open to consumers at 3509 Smallman Street in the Strip District of Pittsburgh, Monday through Saturday.
